UC Irvine presents a range of fellowship opportunities to aid both Ph.D. and Master’s students. The fellowships can be classified as follows:
- Internal Fellowships: Administered by the UC Irvine Graduate Division, these competitively awarded fellowships provide varying award amounts of tuition and/or stipend support. Certain internal fellowships require academic program nominations, with differing departmental and Graduate Division deadlines.
- School & Departmental Fellowships: School-based fellowships for graduate students are offered by university departments to support graduate studies. Based on merit, research, or study area, they can cover tuition, living or research costs, and sometimes provide a stipend. Selection and eligibility varies among these opportunities; consult with your Graduate Program Coordinator.
- Diversity Fellowships: These are competitively awarded to qualified students promoting diversity within the institute. You do not need to apply directly for these fellowships. Instead, your respective departments nominate you.
- Extramural Fellowships: These merit-based fellowships are granted by national, international, or private external foundations. Notably, many of these awards announce their deadlines up to a year in advance of the subsequent academic year’s funding. Some of these opportunities require a campus nomination that typically goes through the Graduate Division. Students may also be eligible to apply to these directly or in combination with their graduate advisor.
- Recruitment Fellowships: Graduate programs nominate top newly admitted students for these fellowships, providing additional financial support. These include multi-year diversity fellowships and aim to bolster departmental financial offers.
