As we bid farewell to summer, we look forward to welcoming another cohort of new students. Later this month, we will be welcoming approximately 450 new international graduate students to campus during the New International Graduate Student Orientation on Tuesday, September 19, 2017

The following day, on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, we will welcome up to 1,000 new master’s and doctoral students to the campus wide New Graduate Student Orientation.  Once again, we will be hosting both events at the Bren Center.  This daylong event is a supplement to school/department-based orientations, and is designed to provide all new graduate students with an opportunity to connect with students across other disciplines and to learn about the diverse campus resources that are available to support them during their graduate careers. Please ensure that your new graduate students will attend.

Also in this issue of the Graduate Monthly Update are highlights from our Summer Research Symposium.   This year, a record number, 110 outstanding undergraduate, master’s and incoming doctoral students from institutions across the country presented their summer research.  By providing talented students the opportunity to work with faculty at the forefront of their fields and to integrate classroom knowledge with practical application, these research projects play a key role in positioning students for future scholarly achievement. Thank you to all who came out in support of this impressive event and who mentored and supported these students. 

Finally, due to the planned growth of the UCI campus, in line with the strategic plan, the campus is re-evaluating student housing including graduate housing, more detailed information is below.

Due to the planned growth of the UCI campus, in line with the strategic plan, the campus is re-evaluating student housing. Currently the housing guarantee for PhD and MFA students extends until a student’s normative time-to-degree for their academic program. This remains in effect for all currently enrolled students, as well as the incoming cohort enrolling for Fall 2017.

The campus is undertaking a housing inventory analysis, now and throughout Fall quarter, to project housing availability in future years and its impact on the growth of the PhD population. Upon completion, the Academic Senate will be asked to review current policy with regard to guaranteed housing for graduate students. Until this time and since we are unsure whether we have sufficient housing stock to continue to offer guaranteed housing through normative time for future cohorts of incoming PhD and MFA students, we are amending the current language on our websites to indicate that we can guarantee students entering in Fall 2018 a minimum of three years of campus housing, with the possibility of lease renewal thereafter. Such language should be included in admission offer letters that are sent to students this year, and any related text on your respective websites should be changed as appropriate.

The campus recognizes that the housing guarantee is a valuable recruitment tool to encourage students to accept our offers of graduate admission, and provides stability to them as they engage in their academic careers at UCI. The campus is committed to providing the best possible resources for our students, and development of a long-term plan to accommodate as many graduate students as possible in campus housing is a very high priority. September is here and we are looking forward to welcoming nearly 1,500 graduate students to campus in a few weeks and helping them begin their graduate journey. Incoming students have been notified to register and should check their emails for the registration link.

We ask that academic units support mandatory attendance to this event and do not schedule overlapping school/program orientations or specialized trainings so students can make it their priority to attend. Self-supporting master’s program students will not attend this event.

The Impact of Orientation and Why Students Need to Attend:

  • This once-a-year event covers common aspects of the graduate student experience at UCI and sets the tone for well-being and professional development that all incoming students need to hear and experience.
  • The program includes sessions on graduate support services (GRC, Career Center, CEI, Counseling Center, International Center etc.), as well as administrative topics to help with success, such as the function of the Graduate Division, an introduction to UCI senior administration, and health insurance.
  • Over the course of the event, students are able to network and engage with others they may not otherwise meet or communicate with in a different setting.
  • This event is not intended to replace or duplicate current department or school-based orientations; rather, it is designed to provide a unified message on topics that apply to all new graduate students.
  • Incoming students will register online by invitation. Please encourage your students to register early.
  • Please Note: The days of the week that these events traditionally take place have shifted in 2017 to accommodate religious holidays.

The call for nominations for the Fletcher Jones Fellowship has been updated for the 2017-2018 academic year. This highly prestigious award provides a UCI doctoral student with a one-year fellowship in the amount of approximately $20,400. Students from all Ph.D. programs are eligible.

Campus Climate Council and Illuminations, in collaboration with Graduate Division, are launching a new initiative, “Graduate Student Tea Talks,” to encourage research exchange, public speaking and social networking for PhD students across campus. Each Tea Talk will feature a graduate student researcher; talks will be open to the campus, including graduate students, undergraduates, faculty, and staff. Events will take place in the ARC.

If you are interested in presenting a five-minute talk followed by Q&A about the work you do in your field, please send us a 100-word description of your work; your department/program; and the names of your faculty adviser(s) and mentor(s). You may also include your country of origin / cultural interests or identity, if appropriate. We invite you to think about your work broadly, with the aim of addressing a general audience; your work can include your dissertation, lab projects, collaborations, and public engagement.

The call for nominations for the Public Impact Fellowship has been updated for the 2017-2018 academic year. Schools may nominate doctoral students to compete for a total of fourteen fellowships. Each of the four full awardees will receive $12,000, and each of the ten honorable mention awardees will receive $1,000. The final selection committee will consider several factors when choosing the awardees, including each student’s presentation, interview, ability to convey their research to a broad audience, academic record, letters of recommendation, degree progress, and potential research impact.

DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) is a registered members association made up of German institutions of higher education and student bodies that provides young people with the opportunity to gain international academic and research experience in Germany.  Candidates who have received an undergraduate degree of all disciplines may apply for the Study Scholarship for study at a  German university as part of a postgraduate program completed in the home country.  Long-Term Research Grants are awarded to highly qualified candidates who have completed a Master’s degree, or in exceptional cases a Bachelor’s degree.  Applicants for independent study/research should apply for a Research Grant.

The UCI Graduate Division supports submission of Fulbright U.S. Student Program applications. Students are encouraged to apply for this prestigious fellowship program, which supports travel and living expenses for a year of research abroad in approximately 140 countries. Students should begin gathering letters of affiliation and recommendation this summer.

UCI’s internal deadline for applications is September 4, 2017. Interviews will be conducted on-campus in mid to late September, after which students will be given the opportunity to revise their applications. Revised applications must be submitted by October 2, 2017 at 5pm.

  • Beginning September 1 application Fee Waivers will be processed for the Fall 2018 application cycle. We offer fee waivers to U.S. citizens, permanent resident, AB540 or DACA eligible students who have participated in a graduate preparation program, who have demonstrate financial need and/or US veterans.
  • Only the Graduate Division can approve or deny a fee waiver. We require supporting documentation from those who are eligible for fee waivers, and it is important to note that applications for admission are NOT considered complete until we have received documentation for AND have approved the fee waiver.
  • Fee waiver information needs to be submitted to the Graduate Division by the student within 7 days of submitting the application or by March 4, whichever comes first.
  • Once we receive supporting documentation, an approval/denial decision is made within one business day. It will then take three to five business days for this to be reflected in the admissions system.
  • Students are notified when their fee waiver has been approved/denied.

In the 2016-2017 academic year, we created UCI-GPS-CIRTL, a collaboration between UCI and the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL). UCI-GPS-CIRTL is focused on Graduate Professional Success (GPS) that is brought to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars via UCI’s Graduate Division, Division of Teaching and Learning, Center for Engaged Instruction, and the national Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL). After expansion to 43 of the country’s leading doctoral-granting institutions, CIRTL is gaining national recognition and is a great way for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to document their pedagogical training according to national standards. The UCI Graduate Division kindly asks that you publicize the new UCI-GPS-CIRTL community to the graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in your programs.

UCI-GPS-CIRTL works with the national CIRTL network to provide programming for UCI graduate students and postdocs that meets the requirements for earning certificates in CIRTL’s Associate, Practitioner, and Scholar levels. Channeling CIRTL’s core values of evidence-based teaching, developing learning communities, learning through diversity, and teaching-as-research (TAR), we work closely with our UCI collaborators to identify already-existing programming and begin developing new programming that will offer opportunities for students to improve their teaching. For example, the Pedagogical Fellows Program and University Studies 390X course each satisfy the associate level requirements for the CIRTL certificate. Additionally, participation in the Mentoring Excellence Program, Foundations of Teaching, and DECADE Plus contribute to the overall requirements to become a CIRTL Associate. In fall of 2017, University Studies 395 will be offered by Dr. Adrienne Williams that is exclusively focused on teaching-as-research (TAR) projects, which helps students reach CIRTL’s Practitioner level. Dr. Williams will also be co-teaching the CIRTL TAR course at the national level.

In the spring of 2017, we awarded 89 Associate-level certificates to a combination of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars at UCI! The Graduate InterConnect Program will continue in fall 2017 with a team of 49 graduate student peer mentors who will provide support and guidance to new international graduate students as they make their transition to the campus.  The Peer Mentors began communicating with the incoming students in July to help them prepare for their arrival and will be an integral part of the Graduate Welcome and Orientation program. They will also contribute to the Blog, host a selection of social events in the fall and will connect students to appropriate staff within their academic programs, to campus and community resources, and with fellow graduate students. Any questions about the program can be sent to Gabriella Pham at x49295.

Through a new institutional subscription sponsored by the Ayala School of Biological Sciences and the School of Medicine, all UCI faculty, students, postdocs and researchers now have access to the Nature Masterclass online course in scientific writing and publishing. With over 30 editors from more than 20 Nature journals serving as instructors, we encourage ALL graduate students, postdocs, researchers, and faculty to participate in this valuable resource. These experts will take you through the entire scientific publishing process. Although this is presented by Nature, the tools and training the Masterclass provides is beneficial for all scholars at any stage of writing for publication – everyone can benefit!

Maintaining overall health and well-being are key to graduate success. This is a six session program focusing on skills and resources related to health and wellness. This certificate program is intended for those who are:

- Interested in resources, strategies and tools to thrive in a demanding work environment

-  Seeking to improve work-life balance and professional development

There are a number for professional development opportunities for students this quarter ranging from 1 hour to 3 days in length. Registration is now available!

This is an intensive 3-day writing opportunity for graduate students in the dissertation phase of their program. The DBC will help students overcome writer’s block, make significant progress in a short period of time, and develop skills for future writing.

The GRC Writing Consultant program includes four trained writing consultants who review academic papers, fellowship applications, and provide feedback on job materials (ex. CV, cover letter). Appointments are available daily from 9:00AM – 5:00PM.
